Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first roles on television included two roles in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mother. But her parents would not permit her to perform until she reached the age of adulthood because of the impact stress might affect their child. Perry states that she did not want to become an actor during high school but decided to take up performing as a form of social interaction at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry managed to get small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. The feeling of homelessness, however, brought her to California to return, where she started working on stage. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared nine times in the ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. In 2017, she played a recurring role on The ABC Political thriller Scandal with her father. She played the role of an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The actress was chosen for the role despite her close relationship with the character's family.
